Congratulations on being engaged! This is such an exciting, special season of your life, so your engagement photos should feel more like a celebration than just a check off the list. Choosing the right location in Boston for your photoshoot can feel overwhelming when there are so many beautiful neighborhoods to pick from. As a Boston engagement photographer, I’ve photographed couples all over the city. Over the past ten years, I’ve learned which Boston engagement photo locations consistently give my couples the most joyful and timeless photos. If you’re looking for engagement photo locations in Boston that feel romantic and classic, these are the five places I recommend most often to my couples.

Boston Engagement Photo Locations I Love as a Boston Engagement Photographer
Boston has no shortage of gorgeous spots for your engagement photos. All the locations listed below are my favorites! Each spot is gorgeous, has it’s own charm, and offers a variety of backdrops that are perfect for engagement sessions.
Boston Public Garden
The Boston Public Garden is one of the most iconic locations in the whole city and for good reason! It’s absolutely beautiful and it has so many picturesque spots for photos. It’s the location in the city where I’ve photographed the most sessions and I am still always finding new spots there that I love. The pond, the fountain in the corner, the weeping willows, the flowers, and of course, the iconic blue bridge are all perfect backdrops for your engagement photos!
I especially love photographing engagement sessions here in the Spring when the gardens are blooming, in early Summer when everything feels lush and vibrant, or the Fall when theres beautiful foliage all throughout the gardens. You can’t go wrong scheduling your session during any season here! Golden hour is beautiful at both sunrise and sunset in the Boston Public Garden. If you want to avoid the crowds, then I always recommend a sunrise session for my couples. During sunrise sessions in the Public Garden we have the whole place to ourselves including the bridge. The bridge without any people on it is a photographer’s dream! I also recommend early mornings especially if you’re bringing your dog to your shoot so that we can limit distractions for them.
The Boston Public Garden is the perfect spot for couples who love nature but still want a Boston feel in their engagement photos!

Beacon Hill
If you’ve ever walked through Beacon Hill and thought, “this place feels straight out of a movie,” then you’d love engagement photos here. The cobblestone streets, tiny hidden alleys, and historic brownstones create such a romantic atmosphere, and it’s one of those locations that instantly feels timeless. This neighborhood is truly a perfect fit for engagement photos any time of year.
Beacon Hill is a place that’s romantic all on its own, so engagement photos here are always so stunning. It’s perfect for the couples who want a little bit of that classic, romantic Boston charm in their gallery. I know all the best spots in Beacon Hill that have the most gorgeous window boxes, the quaintest alleys, and the perfect stoops. Not to mention, we will definitely stop at the most iconic street in all of Boston, Acorn Street. If you’re interested in two locations, then I always recommend the Boston Public Garden and Beacon Hill combo. We can easily walk between these two locations without taking up too much time during your engagement session.

The Charlestown Navy Yard
The Charlestown Navy Yard is one of my most favorite spots in the city. It has the most beautiful view of Boston and it always has the best light. This spot makes the perfect backdrop for engagement photos, especially as the sun sets on the water with all the boats in the background. There is a beautiful walking path all along the waterfront. I always recommend going here for golden hour sessions to catch those views.

The South End
There’s so much to love about the South End! It’s a hidden gem in the city for photoshoots and it has a charm similar to Beacon Hill, but it is much less crowded. I love exploring the South End and finding new spots to photograph here. In addition to the beautiful brownstones that line the streets, there are cute little parks that I love to stop by during your session too. My favorite time of year for sessions in the South End is either during Spring or Summer!

The Boston Seaport
The Boston Seaport is where classy meets coastal charm and its always picture perfect. I love this one because the Boston skyline always makes for a beautiful, timeless backdrop. I love meeting with my couples outside of The Barking Crab restaurant and then strolling all along the water stopping at lots of different spots on the Boston Harbor walk. It’s also a location where you can dress up with a fancy look or you can go for a more casual vibe – both photography nicely with the city backdrop!
If you’re a couple that’s a little bit more modern and loves the city, this is the best spot on the list for you! The city skyline makes a stunning backdrop that you’ll be obsessed with for your photos.
Sessions are great here any time of year and especially in early Spring or Winter when the rest of Boston isn’t lush and green. The buildings photograph beautifully any time of year! I always recommend scheduling your session for sunset here because the golden hour light is unbeatable as the sun sets near the buildings.

How to Choose the Boston Engagement Photo Location That Feels Like You
If you’re having trouble choosing the best location in Boston for your engagement photos, I completely understand. All of these spots are truly so gorgeous and each have their very own unique Boston feel. You absolutely can’t go wrong with any of them! As a Boston engagement photographer, I’m here to help you narrow it down:
- Pick the one that has the most meaning and sentimental value to you! If you and your loved one have a favorite spot in the city, definitely choose that one!
- Choose the one that feels the most comfortable – if there’s a location on the list that you’re already familiar with, that can be the best way to go. When you know a space, it makes it easier to fully be yourself there, which makes for great photos.
- Select the one with the type of background you love the most whether that’s cobblestone streets, city skylines, weeping willows, brownstones, or water views.
All of these locations are dog friendly so if you want to bring your pup, you absolutely can! You can view all my best tips for including your dog in your session here! If you still aren’t sure which location to choose, I’m always here to help guide you and talk through what a session would look like for you at either the Boston Public Garden, Beacon Hill, Charlestown Navy Yard, the South End, and or the Seaport.

The Best Time of Day for Boston Engagement Photos
The best time of day for engagement photos in Boston is typically right at sunrise or an hour and a half before sunset. Morning sessions can be perfect for popular areas like Beacon Hill or the Public Garden because the streets and the gardens are quieter and we can move and explore more freely! Sunrise sessions allow us to have the whole place to ourselves! Sunset sessions work beautifully for waterfront locations like Seaport or Charlestown. This is when the water has a soft, golden glow as a backdrop for your photos.
As your Boston engagement photographer, I always help my couples choose the time that will give us the best light and the most relaxed experience.

What to Wear for Boston Engagement Photos
I love helping my couples choose what to wear for engagement photos! I know it can be so overwhelming choosing outfits, but I’m always here to help. This is my Pinterest board with outfit inspiration that I send to all of my engagement session clients, but there are a few main tips that always apply:
- Choose outfits that compliment each other and don’t match too perfectly
- Neutral colors, earth tones, shades of blues and pinks all photograph beautifully – avoid all neon colors
- Bring layers in the colder months (think cardigans and stylish jackets!)
- Wear outfits that you’re comfortable in
Being comfortable is key to engagement photos that turn out actually feeling like you! Always make sure to try your outfits on at least once before your session to make sure everything fits right. Also, plan to give your outfits a quick steam to get rid of any wrinkles the night before your session!
