If you’ve been dreaming about a dog-friendly Boston photoshoot, this is your sign to stop dreaming and book it! Boston is one of the most beautiful cities, and as a family and dog photographer, I’m here to show you exactly where to go. I’ve been photographing dogs all over this city for years now, and I have so many favorite spots that I’m so excited to share with you. Whether you want something lush and green or waterfront and coastal, Boston has it all, so let’s get into it!
First Things First: Your Dog Does Not Have to Behave a Certain Way for Photos
I want to say this clearly before we get into locations, because I know it’s the thing most dog parents quietly worry about: please, please, please do not spend the days leading up to your dog-friendly Boston photoshoot anxious about whether your dog will cooperate. I have photographed well over 250 dogs in my 11 years of business. Energetic ones, shy ones, stubborn ones, easily distracted ones, dogs who have never sat still for a second in their entire lives, and we always, always get wonderful photos. Always! A dog who won’t sit still isn’t a problem; it’s just a different kind of session, and I know exactly how to work with it.
What looks like “bad behavior” during a photoshoot is often just personality, and personality is exactly what makes a portrait feel real. A dog that is bounding toward the camera with their ears flying back is a one-of-a-kind photo. A dog who is nose-deep in the grass while you laugh at them is a perfect shot. The goal will never be a perfectly behaved, stiff portrait. The goal is to capture a photo that actually looks and feels like your dog. So just make sure to bring the good treats, be ready to roll with however your dog is acting that day, and trust the process. I’ve got the rest. Besides, almost every photo you see had a leash in it and I just edited it out of the final version so please do not think all of the dogs you see in my photos are off-leash!
The Best Dog-Friendly Boston Photoshoot Locations
Boston Public Garden
As the country’s oldest public botanical garden, the Boston Public Garden has hosted its fair share of dogs over the years, and luckily for us, the city remains committed to keeping this gem of Boston very (on-leash) dog-friendly. You can read their policies more in-depth here.
Something I love most about the Public Garden is that it is beautiful for a dog photoshoot at any time of the year, which means timing really comes down to personal preference (and if you need help deciding, I’m here for you!). I’ve had dog photoshoots in the Spring when the tulips are blooming in rows of bright color. Summer in the Public Garden shows off when the trees and ponds are so full of life. The Fall is a personal favorite when the oranges and reds completely hide the ground beneath your feet. Or for those pups who love cooler temps, the Winter is always a great time for photos when fresh snow covers every single surface and it feels like you’ve wandered into a movie. You cannot go wrong with any season when choosing the Boston Public Garden for your photoshoot location.
I wrote an entire blog post about why the Public Garden is one of the best photoshoot locations in Boston if you want to see even more images and reasons why it’s one of my all-time favorite locations, but the short version is that it’s endlessly versatile.
Best For: Confident, social dogs who aren’t easily distracted or overwhelmed by foot traffic and dog-parents who want a classic and timeless backdrop.
Things to Know: This spot is busy year-round with tourists, so peak hours can be a lot for easily distracted. Early morning sessions are quieter here for those kinds of dogs. I also do not recommend if your dog likes to chase squirrels or does not behave well around other dogs. This space also requires leashes.
Vibe Check: Classic, romantic, and lush. It feels like a stroll through a movie set in every season.
North Point Park
Thanks to its beautiful paths and city scene, North Point Park in Cambridge is one of my favorite places for anyone looking for dog-friendly Boston photoshoot spots that feel a little more special than your average park.
First, let’s talk about the Zakim Bridge. The Zakim Bridge is a massive cable bridge that towers over the Charles River, connecting Cambridge and Boston, and North Point Park gives you an unobstructed view. No matter who we are photographing, having the Zakim Bridge as a backdrop takes the images to a completely different level.
Not to mention the beautiful backdrops all throughout the park. The willows, the lush flowerbeds, the winding paths. If your dog is happiest when they’re outside with a little more room to roam, they will be completely in their element here.
Best For: Adventurous, energetic dogs who do better with fewer crowds.
Things to Know: The parking here can be a little tricky with only a few meter spots.
Vibe Check: Urban but still very lush and spacious, with a really unique bridge in the background that you can’t find anywhere else.

Arnold Arboretum
The Arnold Arboretum is truly one of my most favorite places in the city! It’s 281 acres of endless backdrops for your dog photoshoot. Every time I have a session at the Arnold Arboretum, I find a new spot that I love!
There are areas with gorgeous stonework, gorgeous overflowing gardens, paths amongst the trees, and a beautiful row of lilacs that you can’t beat in the Spring. Because this location is so large, we can really tailor our shoot to what works best for you and your dog. Just let me know what kind of feel you’re going for, and we’ll find the perfect corner of the arboretum to call our own.
The Arnold Arboretum is also incredibly dog-friendly. Like, very dog-friendly. Depending on the day, there’s a solid chance you’ll spot more dogs than people, which I personally love. Plus, if your pup tends to get distracted by all that canine company, the great thing about having so much space to work with is that we can always find a quieter stretch of the property to settle into.
Best For: All personalities! Shy dogs who need space, social dogs who love seeing other dogs, and high-energy guys who need room to roam. The sheer size of this place means we can find the right space for whoever your dog is.
Things to Know: This is one of the most dog-friendly locations on this list, but leashes are required.
Vibe Check: Expansive, serene, airy, and very open. Feels more like a private estate than a public park.

The Seaport
So far, I’ve shown you some of the greenest, most lush dog-friendly Boston locations this city has to offer. But now it’s time to shift our focus toward the water, because Boston’s waterfront spots are in a completely different category than anything else on this list.
The Seaport puts us right up against the Boston Harbor with cobblestone roads built alongside the water and architecture that somehow manages to feel both historic and modern at the same time. You’re not just taking photos at a park here; you’re stepping into the full coastal New England experience, with that unmistakable Boston Harbor light catching everything just right. It’s the kind of location that makes every single photo look like it belongs in a magazine. Your dog is trotting along the cobblestones with the Boston skyline behind them! Photos taken here feel so iconic and timeless and is always a go-to location recommendation for those of you who want images of your pup that feel very urban.
Best For: Dogs who are comfortable with urban environments with foot traffic and a bit of noise. Perfect for pups with a natural “I own this place” energy. You know the ones!
Things to Know: The cobblestone walkways are charming but can be a little uneven underfoot, so keep that in mind for older dogs or those with mobility restrictions.
Vibe Check: Coastal and editorial. This spot is perfect for anyone who wants coastal Boston as the backdrop.

Charlestown Navy Yard
If you want something that feels truly unlike anywhere else in the city, the Charlestown Navy Yard is it. Similar to the Seaport, it has beautiful coastal city vibes but I love it even more because you can see the whole skyline in your background.
The historic brick buildings, the sweeping views of the harbor and the Boston skyline, and the USS Constitution sitting right there in the water. It’s a dog-friendly Boston location that gives your photos something really unique that you can’t find anywhere else in the city.
Best For: Dogs who aren’t phased by new environments. This spot has a lot of visual and sensory interest, so it shines with dogs who are naturally curious rather than easily overwhelmed.
Things to Know: The views here are genuinely jaw-dropping, and the historic backdrop makes for photos that feel completely one-of-a-kind. Weekday mornings are the quietest time here.
Vibe Check: Historic and dramatic.

Your Own Backyard
Hear me out on this one, because I think people really underestimate how good in-home and backyard sessions can be. You don’t need a massive yard to do this. A small patio or a bright living room can tell an honest and meaningful story about who you are and where your life with your dog actually happens.
I love photographing a dog in their own space, where they’re completely relaxed and totally themselves. You don’t have to worry about distractions or leashes. They can just be exactly who they are, in the place they love the most. Some of my favorite dog portraits have been in my clients’ homes!
Best For: Anxious, reactive, or shy dogs who are most themselves at home. Also, a great choice for senior dogs who move a little slower but deserve portraits just as much as anyone else.
Things to Know: You know your own home best! I might even ask you what I should know before coming.
Vibe Check: Warm and intimate. Photos in your own home tend to feel the most real and comfortable.

More Tips for Planning Your Dog-Friendly Boston Photoshoot
Now that you know where we’re going, let’s talk about how to make sure your dog-friendly Boston photoshoot goes as smoothly as possible. I’ve photographed over 250 dogs at this point and I’ve seen it all. These tips are really easy but make a huge difference.
What to Bring to Your Dog-Friendly Boston Photoshoot?
Treats and lots of them! I recommend bringing a variety: everyday treats your pup gets all the time and the high-value stuff that really gets their attention. Cheese, peanut butter, deli meat, bacon… whatever makes your dog completely forget that anything else in the world exists. We will go through them, so more is more here!
Their Favorite Toy, especially if your dog is more toy-motivated than treat-motivated. A beloved ball or squeaky toy can be the difference between a dog looking at the camera and a dog looking at absolutely everything except the camera.
A Lint Roller because if you share your home with a dog, you already know. I don’t think we need much explanation here!
Their Leash because even at off-leash-friendly spots, having the leash available for moments when we need a little extra control, makes everything run more smoothly. Don’t worry about having the leash in your photos, though. That’s where I work my editing magic!
A Friend. This is one of my most important tips for a successful dog-friendly Boston photoshoot, and it applies whether you’re coming solo with your pup or bringing the whole family. Having an extra set of hands dedicated entirely to your dog is a game-changer. If you don’t have someone available, check out For The Love of Paws Boston. They offer dog handling support for photoshoots and are so wonderful to work with. P.S. Mention my name when you reach out for a discount!
Get Your Dog Groomed One to Two Weeks Before
Yes, you want your pup looking their absolute best for photos! Getting them groomed a week or two before the session gives them time to fully settle into their new look before I show up with a camera. Your pup deserves to look their best for their close-up!
Don’t Feed Them for a Few Hours Before The Shoot
If your dog is coming to a session with a full belly, then treats will lose a lot of their power. We want your dog to be very treat-motivated so plan to hold off on food for a couple of hours before we meet. This way they will be much more willing to follow directions.
Exercise Them Before Your Boston Dog-Friendly Photoshoot
A tired dog is a more cooperative dog. Taking your pup for a longer-than-usual walk or letting them run in the yard before we meet up burns off that extra energy that might otherwise have them zooming in circles when we’re trying to take portraits. You don’t want them exhausted, just pleasantly worn out. There’s a window between “bouncing off the walls” and “ready for a nap,” and that window is where the best dog photos live.
If you want to go even deeper on preparing for a dog photoshoot, I have a whole post on my top tips for a smooth dog photoshoot that covers everything from what to wear to how to handle a nervous pup.
Questions You Might Have for Your Dog-Friendly Boston Photoshoot
Are dogs allowed on public transportation in Boston?
Sometimes, but it depends on the time of day, the type/size of your dog, and the operator’s discretion. Service animals are allowed, but non-service dogs have more restrictions, especially during peak commute hours. If your dog is small and comfortable in a carrier, that may be the easiest option. For larger dogs, I usually recommend planning around a car, Uber Pet, or a rideshare so the session starts as calmly as possible. Always check the MBTA’s current pet policy before your session.
What time of year is best for dog-friendly photoshoots?
There isn’t a bad time, but each season has its own magic. Spring is so stunning with the blooms coming in and that fresh energy everywhere. Summer gives us long golden-hour evenings and lush greenery at every location. Fall in Boston is unreal. The foliage is something people travel from across the country to see, and your dog trotting through a carpet of orange and red leaves is the kind of photo you’ll have on your wall forever. Winter, especially with fresh snow, turns the city into something out of a dream. My best advice? Book when you feel excited about it, and trust that we’ll work with whatever season we’re in.
Can my whole family join my dog’s photoshoot?
Absolutely! I would love nothing more. Including your family in a dog-friendly Boston photoshoot is one of my very favorite things to do! The dynamic between a dog and the people who love them is where some of the most genuine moments happen. You can read more about planning Boston family photos with dogs here. And if you’re bringing kids along too, I have a whole guide on prepping your family for a photo shoot that covers all the little things that make a session with young kids feel relaxed and fun instead of stressful.
Can I bring more than one dog to my Boston dog-friendly photoshoot?
More dogs, more fun! I really mean that! Multiple-dog sessions are a little more logistically involved (this is a situation where I’d especially recommend bringing that extra helper we talked about!), but they’re also incredibly rewarding. There is something so wonderful about capturing the relationship between dogs who live and grow up together, and those photos tend to be some of the most fun in any gallery. Bring them all!
