Imagine Christmas coming around and you’ve already checked family photos off your to-do list; you have a few holiday card options you love, and the best part… it only took 15 minutes. Some might call that a Christmas miracle!

Between school events, travel plans, gift shopping, and family parties, somehow every week fills up before you even realize it. That’s a big reason I love Christmas mini sessions. You choose the time, bring your favorite people, and let me handle the rest.

Let’s talk about what a Christmas mini session looks like, who I think they work best for, when I’d recommend a full session instead, and all my tips and tricks for a successful session!

What Is a Christmas Mini Session?

A Christmas mini session is my short-and-sweet version of a full photo session. I’ve chosen the date and location ahead of time, then you pick the time slot. The big decisions are already made before you even book, which is the whole point.

My Christmas minis are 15 minutes long, and because I already know the location, I come with a plan. There’s no wandering around trying to find the spot. We can jump right into photos and keep everyone moving. For some families, that little 15-minute window is exactly what they need. We can capture a good mix of photos in a short period of time.

Is a Christmas Mini Session Right for Your Family?

The easiest way to figure out whether a Christmas mini session is right for you is to think about what you want out of your photos. If you’re hoping for just one photo for a holiday card, then a Christmas tree farm mini can be such a good way to make that happen without turning family photos into a huge production.

I’d also think about how your kids usually handle something and someone new. Minis tend to work really well for kids who can walk into a new place, check things out for a minute, and then jump into whatever we’re doing. They definitely don’t need to be outgoing or know how to smile on command! I’m much more interested in whether a quicker pace feels natural for your family.

I also love minis for families I photograph regularly. If we already know each other, your kids know what to expect from me, and we can jump right back into it. They’re such a fun way to get an updated little snapshot of your family every year without needing a full session every single season.

A little preparation can go a long way for a mini session, so you can take a look at my family photography page to see more of what it feels like to be in front of my camera.

When I’d Recommend a Full Family Session Instead

Beyond how quickly your kids warm up, I’d recommend a full session for certain families for a couple of reasons. With a full session, the experience is completely customized to your family. You have the freedom to choose when and where to take your photos, plus plenty of time to move around and change things up as we go.

Extra time can be especially helpful if you’re bringing your dog! They just need some extra time to sniff everything in sight before they’re ready to pay attention to me. Maybe they need a little lap around the location first, or we need to stop for a minute while they investigate something off camera. We have time for that! I can follow your family’s pace instead of watching the clock and trying to squeeze one more thing in.

A full session is also what I would recommend when you want more combinations and a wider variety of images in your final gallery. This allows us to get smiling at the camera and lots of candid moments too. This is great for allowing time to let your kids and dogs roam and explore the full magic of the tree farm.

If you’re stuck between a mini and a full session, send me a message, and I’ll help you figure out which one is going to be better for you and your family.

Christmas Mini Sessions at Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm in Stow

Now we’re onto the best part— talking about the location! Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm is one of my favorite spots just outside of Boston. The rows of evergreens make everything feel festive without needing a single prop. It’s the perfect place for that classic Christmas look.

I’ve been coming back to Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm for holiday sessions for a few years now, so at this point, I know the farm like the back of my hand. I already have my tried-and-true spots, and I know how to move through the property without wasting a second of our time trying to figure things out. That makes a huge difference during a mini session.

One of my favorite things about having Christmas mini sessions here is that we get the farm to ourselves! There’s no trying to photograph around other families or waiting for another photographer to finish using a spot I love. We have room to move around and make the whole 15 minutes feel a lot more relaxed. This is especially helpful if you have kids or dogs who get distracted easily, or you feel uncomfortable posing in front of a camera with a bunch of people watching (trust me, I get it!)

Your dog can come too! Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm is dog-friendly, so your furry family member is absolutely invited and even encouraged to come. Your dog can even be off-leash here so we can capture some fun action photos too if time allows! But don’t worry, we’ll talk MUCH more about bringing your dog in a bit.

If a Christmas tree farm is already sounding like your dream location, I have a whole blog about why you should choose one for your family photos. Fair warning, I may convince you to make tree farm photos a yearly thing!

What to Expect Before & on the Day of Your Christmas Mini Session

Once you book your Christmas mini session, I’ll send you everything you need to know before the day gets here. You’ll get directions to Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm, parking information, exactly where to find me once you arrive, and all the other little details you’ll need so you feel prepared and confident going into our shoot.

On the day of, I always recommend giving yourself extra time to park, get everyone out of the car, do last-minute touch-ups, and make your way over to me without feeling rushed. Since mini sessions move quickly and I’m photographing families back to back, it’s really important that you arrive on time. If you’re late, that time comes out of your 15-minute session, and I would hate for you to lose your time slot because you were still trying to get everyone ready.

Once we start, I’ll take it from there. I’ll guide you through where to go and what to do, keep track of the shots and combinations we’ve already gotten, and make sure we use every minute well.

How to Prepare Your Kids for a Christmas Mini Session

You know your kids better than anyone, so I’d prep them in whatever way is going to make this feel the most normal for them. If you have a kid who wants to know every single detail before leaving the house, tell them we’re going to a Christmas tree farm to take some photos together and that we’ll only be there for a little bit. If your kid is going to ask 47 follow-up questions and start stressing about it, keep it way more casual.

Please don’t feel like you need to practice anything beforehand. Your kids don’t need to know how to pose or smile on command! I’ve photographed SO many different personalities over the years, and part of my job is figuring out what works for the kid standing in front of me that day.

From there, think about the little things that usually help your kid have a good day. If they fall apart when they’re hungry, make sure they’ve eaten before you head to the farm. If skipping a nap is guaranteed to end badly, choose your time slot with that in mind. Give them the best chance to show up feeling like themselves.

If you want to do a little more prep before your session, I have a blog with all my tips for preparing kids for family photos.

Can You Bring Your Dog to a Christmas Mini Session?

YES! Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm is dog-friendly, so your pup is absolutely welcome to come along. We will likely keep your dogs on leash so make sure to think about getting them a cute collar and leash since they will show in photos sometimes.

Once you book your session, I’ll also send you my dog prep guide so you know exactly what to do before we meet. If your dog tends to settle better after getting some energy out, plan a walk before you head to the farm. Bring whatever treats they’ll do basically anything for, too! If you know you’ll want a few photos without your pup, having another person nearby to take the leash can make that part SO much easier.

More than anything, I want you to know your dog doesn’t need to show up perfectly trained for great photos. I’ve photographed hundreds of dogs who are shy, wildly excited, way more interested in sniffing than looking at me, or fully convinced the entire farm needs to be explored first. I’m very used to dogs having their own agenda and I have the utmost patience for them!

If your dog is fully part of the family, you’ll probably love meeting the LDP Dog Pack. If you want more practical prep before session day, read my tips for bringing your dog to family photos.

What to Wear for a Christmas Mini Session

Don’t let outfits become something that makes you regret booking family photos! I promise, it doesn’t need to be complicated. In fact, I’d keep it pretty simple and let the tree farm do a lot of the Christmas work for us. There’s already going to be so much green, so I recommend choosing colors that complement each other. Red is an obvious choice, but cream, warm browns, denim, and muted greens can all work really well against the trees.

My biggest advice — pick out clothes that you’d normally wear, just a little more polished. If your family never dresses super formal, your Christmas mini session isn’t the day to change your style.

It’s also so important that you all feel comfortable, and in Boston, that means warm clothes and layers. If your kids are freezing, we’re going to know. Choose pieces you can move around in, and make sure anything new gets a test run at home first so we’re not discovering an unbearably itchy sweater or uncomfy shoes the day of.

Once you book, I’ll send you my outfit guide to help you pull everything together. You can send me photos of what you’re considering, too! Sometimes you just need another set of eyes, and I’m happy to be that.

What Else You Need to Know About Christmas Mini Sessions

How much does a Christmas mini session cost?

My 2026 Christmas mini sessions are $500. I know pricing is one of the first things you’re probably looking for when you’re deciding whether a mini session makes sense for your family, so I like to keep this part nice and simple!

How many photos are included in a Christmas mini session?

My Christmas mini sessions include 15 final images. I know that can sound like a small number when you’re used to seeing full family galleries. You will have more than 15 images in your final gallery so you can always buy the whole gallery afterwards if you love every image!

You’ll still have enough variety to choose a favorite for your holiday card, update a few frames around the house, or finally replace that family photo from three years ago! The whole point of a mini is that it gives you a fresh little snapshot of your family.

When should I book a Christmas mini session?

Pretty much as soon as you know you want one! I only offer a limited number of Christmas mini sessions and the time slots book up very quickly. I always release available dates and time for mini sessions to my newsletter subscribers first. You can subscribe here! My 2026 minis are on October 21, which might feel early when we’re talking about Christmas, but I promise you’ll be VERY happy to have photos checked off before the holiday season gets completely bananas. You can take a look at the current available time slots here.

What happens if it rains?

If the weather decides to throw us a curveball (which, let’s be honest, is a real possibility here in Boston), I have a backup plan! My rain date for the 2026 Christmas mini sessions is October 28. I know weather can feel like one more thing to worry about when you’re already getting everyone ready for photos, so I hope that having a backup date takes a little pressure off.

Can extended family come to a Christmas mini session?

If you’re planning to bring extended family, I’d recommend booking a full session instead. Once we start adding grandparents or aunts, uncles, and cousins, there are usually a lot more combinations everyone wants, and 15 minutes just isn’t enough time to get all of them. A full session gives us more breathing room to photograph everyone together and still get the smaller groupings you care about without rushing through the whole thing.

Are mini sessions only for families?

Nope! My Christmas mini sessions are open to any type of session, so you definitely don’t need to have kids to book one. Couples sessions are so fun at the tree farm, and I also love these for maternity photos if you want something seasonal. If you love the idea of Christmas photos at Mistletoe Tree Farm, it’s perfect for any season of life you’re in.

Can I book a full session at Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm instead?

YES! If you love the look of Mistletoe Christmas Tree Farm but want more time than a mini gives us, you can absolutely book a full session there instead. I offer full sessions at the farm from October through December. Full sessions allow us to slow things down a little and make the experience more specific to your family. It’s a really good option if you already know the tree farm is where you want your photos, but you’d rather have the extra time to settle in and make a night of it.
